What about the rest of the prizes? I remember there were many more. (you might have said that in the video, but i can’t watch it. On vacation away from computer…but very eager to know). Thanks!

  • Todd says:

Was happened to the “MacFiver” prize idea?

  • Todd says:

Oh and thanks so much for all your hard work. This contest was a blast!

  • Ragnar says:

Congrats! Especially to Tom, who I know from LED appliances, but he seems to be what we call a “Tausendsassa” in Germany.

Cool contest! Would love to see the video edited down to the 8 minutes of the winners though, there’s a lot of mindless chatter in there, tough to sit through the whole thing.

Is this the ULTIMATE 555? http://www.ordigami.net/timer555
and what category would you enter it under? Lol

  • johan says:

Quite disappointed with some of the choices. Really, you picked servo tester twice? It’s like in all the books about 555, all over the internet and who knows how many have built it before. Thought this was about making new things… glad I didn’t enter…

    • Sorry to hear you’re disappointed. It was the broad range of all uses that Tom had, along with the nature of presenting the information in a format that could teach others for a long time.

    :( no runner up prizes then?… :(

    • We’re finishing up prize awarding right now. The 13 winners got to pick their prizes and the remaining 40 or so prizes are being given away at random as door prizes. Good luck!

  • Congrats from Extech to all the 555 contest winners! What a wonderfully diverse and eclectic mix of applications for the classic triple-five. I love it!

Great job coordinating, Chris and Jeri. Congrats to you too. This competition was exciting to watch and develop. I hope it inspires more and more hackers and makers, with each entry — prize winner or not — spurring more creativity and inventiveness.

Sad I didn’t win, really wanted one of those Xprotolab scopes!
Well done to the winners, particularly ‘Jim Frize — 555 Synth Sequencer’ very cool!
    ‘Alexis Kotlowy — 555 Pong-like DodgeBall Game’ impressive :)
‘Randy Elwin — Le Domineux’ really grew on me. Very well done! They take on a life of their own! Presentation was nice, music etc :)

    • Even if you don’t get one as a random prize (still think they are potentially doing that sometime soon?), I would definitely recommend buying one. I got one early on and it’s super impressive! Now the newer versions have a working USB data connection, and tons of awexome updates to the firmware. For $35 he’s practically giving them away! Ooops, scratch that… price just went up to $49. You can now buy a kit for $35 though if you have a good SMT iron.

I already received a door prize. I won a XESS XuLa-200 board. Thanks XESS!
Of course, I don’t know if Chris has selected all the door prize winners yet.

Cool man! thanks for the info. Will definitely get one. The USB data connection sounds rad. I’m sure some nice open source software will spring up :)

Thank you for doing this! I miss the spirit of the Radio Shack of my youth, and will never give up my small collection of Forrest Mims’ Engineer’s Notebooks. The 555 will live forever.

    Tinker on!

I was told about a 556 application like 25 years ago that I cannot re engineer.

It used one 556, and controlled the tilt and span of a large satellite dish cover in mirrors to focus the sun’s energy a steam generator. At dusk, the dish returned to a start point automatically set to track the sun the next day.
